No doubt you’re familiar with the expression, “You get what you pay for.” With countless low-cost choices for every imaginable product only a click away, it can be hard to remember that a lower price often means poor quality. The good stuff usually costs a little more — but it’s worth it, especially when it’s something going into your body. That’s why choosing high-quality herbal supplements is so important to your health as well as the Earth’s.
At Wildcrafter, we’re committed to creating products that are good for both humans and the planet. Every decision we make, from where we source our ingredients to what kind of K-cup® we use to how we test our products for purity, revolves around our desire to create a product of the highest quality without sacrificing sustainability.
Many herbs used for supplements aren’t organic and may be sourced using methods or raw materials that endanger the natural environment, but this isn’t always clear from a products’ description. Because we believe in transparency, we’d like to share a little bit about what makes our products and ingredients so special. After all, you deserve to know exactly what you’re getting (and what you’re not) in our high-quality herbal supplements.
Honoring Indigenous Wisdom
Cultures around the world have been harnessing the healing power of plants since ancient times. Travel to any corner of the globe, and you’ll find a history of herbal medicine steeped in traditional wisdom.
Wildcrafter’s founder and product formulator, Tieraona Low Dog, MD, has loved plants since she was a girl and has gathered, grown, studied, and used botanical medicines for more than 40 years. Dr. Low Dog has a deep respect for the traditions at the heart of herbalism, and this respect infuses Wildcrafter’s decisions about where we source our botanical ingredients.
Take the plant turned herbal supplement maca, for example. An exceptionally hardy root, maca grows at altitudes as high as 15,000 feet in Peru’s highlands and has been cultivated by the local indigenous populations for over 2,000 years as a dietary staple and fertility aid. Today, maca is in high demand because of its potential to boost energy and enhance endurance.*
As a result of this demand, companies in other parts of the world are now attempting to grow maca using some questionable seed-stealing practices. At Wildcrafter, we’ve chosen to stick with the original Peruvian maca because not only is it more nutritious, we know that a plant this resilient, and the people who grow it, deserve to be honored.
Picking the Perfect Plants
Sometimes, an herb’s medicinal power becomes so widely known and appreciated that the plant itself becomes endangered due to overuse. This is the case with rhodiola, an adaptogen that has a long history of use for enhancing endurance and resilience* and now a common herbal supplement. In some parts of the world, the sustainability of wild-harvested rhodiola is a concern, and efforts are being made to protect the plant as well as the sensitive habitat in which it grows.
Bearing these concerns about overharvesting in mind, we are very careful about where we get the rhodiola we use in our Inner Warrior blend. We love herbs too much to contribute to their demise!
Even though we’re very selective about our botanicals that make up our high-quality herbal supplements — making sure they’re organic, non-GMO, and sustainably harvested — we still take the extra step of testing our products for purity. Every batch of herbs we buy is exhaustively tested and cleared from over 300 different pesticides and herbicides, as well as heavy metals. No product is ever shipped until it is perfect.
Helping Communities Through Organic Coffee
Did you know that most conventional coffee growers use hybrid beans that are designed to grow in the sun instead of the shade, coffee’s preferred environment? Because planting and harvesting shade-grown coffee is more expensive, big coffee companies clear-cut trees to create a sunny space to grow their hybrid beans. As you can imagine, this has a devastating impact on the region — and its people.
At Wildcrafter, we’ve chosen to formulate our botanical blends using 100% organic, fair trade coffee beans sourced from women- and community-owned cooperatives in Colombia. This means that we’re able to support the livelihood of these hard-working cooperative members while also providing you with a delicious cup of coffee, so you can feel good about every sip.
Even if we weren’t considering the people who grow and harvest our coffee beans (which we’d never not do, but just hypothetically), we’d still want to use organic coffee for our Wildcrafter blends. That’s because conventional coffee is one of the most heavily treated crops in the world, meaning it’s sprayed with all sorts of pesticides and herbicides. We prefer our coffee clean and clear — and without a side of pesticides.
Choosing K-Cups® that are Easy to Recycle
Most K-cups® are made with #7 plastic that, while technically recyclable, is not accepted at many recycling facilities. Even if you do find a facility that can process #7 plastic, the fact that the cup is sealed with a foil lid and contains a paper filter means these components must be separated before they can be recycled. Not exactly a smooth process.
Working to minimize our environmental footprint, Wildcrafter has chosen to be among the very small minority using #5 plastic cups that are accepted at most recycling facilities. Some of the other details that make our K-cups® more sustainable include:
- A small tab on the side, which many other K-cups® don’t have, so you can easily peel off the lid for better recycling
- 100% biodegradable and compostable paper filter and coffee grounds
All of these choices mean that Wildcrafter’s K-cups® are among the 10% of those on the market that are considered easily recyclable. They are also SCS Global Certified Recyclable. Nothing but the best for our coffee — and our customers!
